Principal’s Message – August 8th, 2019

Dear Parents and Friends of Loreto Nedlands

The inaugural Loreto Colloquium was held in Adelaide last weekend. I had the pleasure to attend, along with members of the Loreto Nedlands School Board. The Colloquium provided us with an opportunity to be challenged and to reflect on our organisational culture in order to strengthen the Loreto mission into the future. The various speakers guided us, along with others in the Loreto network, to deepen our knowledge of the charism of Mary Ward and the educational vision of Mother Gonzaga Barry.
During the pupil free day last week, the staff participated in a workshop with Dr Elaine McDonald, Head of Policy and Practice at Dublin University. Dr McDonald visited us in Perth following her presentation at the Board Colloquium. Dr McDonald lead conversation with the staff as she encouraged us to reimagine our mission and charism as we plan for the future of Loreto Nedlands. Dr Elaine McDonald presented the Mary Ward Justice Lecture in the evening and once again, challenged the audience to reflect on the legacy of Mary Ward and how we can keep her memory and vision alive.

One of the challenges that we face, as a contemporary Catholic school, is to ensure we live our mission to be an inclusive school. All our students are precious, valued and respected. Every student deserves to be treated with dignity and recognised that they are created in the image of God. Working in a school environment, such as Loreto Nedlands, it is not difficult for us to see God in every student. They are so full of love, joy and optimism about the world that we cannot help but be delighted in their presence every day. In order to respect the dignity of every child it is important that parents adhere to our code of conduct and refrain from speaking about other children in a negative way. Concerns that parents may observe, in the classroom during parent help or on the playground during after school play, need to be communicated with the class teacher rather than discussed with other parents. This can be seen as gossip and does little to respect the dignity of the child.

Lord God,
Your Son commanded his disciples to
“Let the children come to me.”
Look with kindness upon us
and help us to shepherd your children,
and lead them into your loving embrace,
so that they may know your life and your love.
Amen.

This week I am delighted to welcome new families to our school. We welcome Poppy and Valerie into Year Five and Christian into Year One. We wish these students, and their parents a happy and fruitful association with our school.

We offer our condolences to the Yoneda  family for the recent passing of their Grandmother and Mother. Our deepest sympathy and prayers to Nanaka  and Yurika during this difficult time.

Earlier this week the annual Parent Voice Survey was distributed to parents, via Survey Monkey. Please take the time to add your voice to the ongoing improvement process for our school. Your details are anonymous and all information submitted is confidential. This is an opportunity for parents to let us know what we are doing well and areas that could improve. A summary will be made available once the survey has closed.

The Year Six Confirmation was a joyful and faith filled occasion. We were delighted that Archbishop Costelloe SDB could perform the ceremony and say Mass for the Confirmation candidates and their families and friends. My congratulations to all the students Confirmed and to the staff and parents who assisted and prepared the students to receive the Sacrament.

I look forward to welcoming parents to the Keeping Safe Workshop on Friday at 2.00pm in the Library followed by the Year Four Class Assembly commencing at 2.30pm.
