  1. Update advice on International Travel

Travelling in the current context presents increased risks, including of significant travel disruptions and delays. The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) has raised the level of advice for a number of countries.  Conditions are changing rapidly and further updates are likely.

International travel (new information as at 18 March 2020)

The Smart Traveller advice level for all Australians travelling overseas has been upgraded to a level 4 – ‘do not travel overseas at this time’. This is the highest level of advice.

Large gatherings (new information as at 18 March 2020)

The Australian Government announced that all organised, non-essential gatherings attended by more than 100 people for indoor events and more than 500 people for outdoor events must be cancelled from Wednesday 18 March 2020.

  1. Social distancing measures

 I reinforce the need to ensure social distancing measures. This include but are not limited to;

  • Wash your hands frequently
  • Maintain social distancing
  • Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth
  • Practice respiratory hygiene. This means covering your mouth and nose with your bent elbow or tissue when you cough or sneeze. Then dispose of the used tissue immediately
  • If you have fever, cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical care early
  • Stay home if you feel unwell. If you have a fever, cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical attention and call in advance. Follow the directions of your local health authority.

I have asked that all teachers explicitly instruct all students of these measures at numerous times throughout the day.

Please be assured staff, students and parents will be informed of Loreto Nedlands position on events, remote teaching and learning and proactive social distancing measures as soon as practically possible.

I thank you for your patience during uncertain times where information is changing rapidly.

Whilst the students enjoyed the long weekend on Monday the staff gathered together for professional learning to enhance our approach to teaching and learning at Loreto Nedlands. The staff are working together on Literacy and Guided Reading practices and are dedicated to ensure continuity of approach across the school.  The teachers also refined running record methods and most importantly discovered ways to use this data to improve and enhance the teaching and learning model.

Harmony Day is celebrated across Australia on Saturday.  Harmony Day celebrates Australia’s cultural diversity, inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone. In light of recent global events we need to take time to help each other and realise we are all in this together and unity will prevail.  We can all take the time to reflect upon and put into action as we strive to ensure the value and dignity of every human being is recognised and respected.  Happy Harmony Day to you all.

”Peace here on earth cannot be maintained unless the good of the human person is safeguarded, and men and women are willing to trust each other and share their riches of spirit and talent. If peace is to be established it is absolutely necessary to have a firm determination to respect other persons and peoples and their dignity, and to be zealous in the practice of brotherhood (and sisterhood). Hence peace is likewise the fruit of love.

– Gaudium et spes, Pope Paul VI

During these challenging times please also be mindful of exercising the Gospel values of kindness, calmness and charity. There will be opportunities for parents to model this in various ways. It might be offering the pensioner a toilet roll in the line of the supermarket or contributing to a hamper that will go to our hard working doctors and nurses. These are all potential “moments of greatness” your children will see and never forget. I’m a firm believer that even during our most darkest and stressful times, humanity can shine through in the positive and generous actions we have the power to make.

Best wishes for the week ahead.

Acting Principal
