Pope Francis has designated September 1 as the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation. During the Season of Creation, we pray and act to protect God’s creation. The season begins on September 1, the Day of Prayer for Creation, and runs through to October 4, the Feast of St. Francis, who is the patron saint of ecology in many traditions.

This season is a special time for the Creator and each other. Some of us pray, some of us do hands-on projects, some of us advocate. We all protect creation. The momentum continues long after the season ends. By seeding ongoing prayer, changes in lifestyle, and advocacy, the season grows hope in our communities each year. It’s powerfully good work that’s urgently needed.

Year Four News

The Year Fours have had a busy term, filled with lots of exciting events and work! We have been lucky enough to have Miss Papali completing her final practicum placement with us, and she has made sure we have had a lot of fun in all of our learning. We have been busy filming interviews and advertisements in Religious Education, making convicted posters in History and using objects and water to measure mass and capacity in Maths. In Week 4, we visited the Duyfken and WA Shipwrecks Museum in Fremantle to learn about the early Dutch exploration of the West Coast of Australia. We were then able to share our learning from the term with the school at our Year Four Assembly last week.

Last Friday, we participated in Reconciliation with Fr Gavin to prepare to receive the Sacrament of First Eucharist. It was a lovely time to reflect and prepare to receive Jesus. Finally, in Technologies the Year Fours had a fantastic time planning and making boats out of recycled materials. We can’t wait to test them next week to see how many marbles they can hold!

Mary Ward International Project

Hello my friends at Loreto Nedlands.

My name is Arya and I am 9 years old. I go to a school with a difference in West Bengal.

All members of my family work in the brickfields.  These are open air factories where bricks are made by hand.  As you can imagine, it’s very hard work and it’s usually pretty dirty and dusty.  Sometimes the temperature is over 40 degrees!!

The only education provided in our brickfields is run by the Kolkata Mary Ward Social Centre.  For three hours every day we attend classes in groups of 50-75 children at a time in our age groups.  Our classrooms are in the open air, however we do peg our work along pieces of string. I feel so proud when my work is chosen to be displayed.  We have two teachers and they help every student to do their best with their studies.  I love my classes each day, even though I am often tired after making bricks in the hot sun.  After a few months my family will move to another brickfield for work.  I always feel sad when we leave our little school.

We are also very fortunate that we have a small medical centre at our brickfield so members of my family can receive help if we are feeling unwell or injured.

My dream is to attend a government school and to become a nurse.  Earlier this year we were hit by a severe hurricane and many people were injured and houses destroyed.  My dog, Anish, went missing for several days, but luckily we found him hiding in the brickfield.

For my heart I want to thank you for your interest in my life.

I am just like you: with hopes and dreams and struggles and disappointments.

Thank you for praying for me, thinking of me and learning about me.

I send you special greetings and say a big

THANK YOU!

The money you raise during Loreto Week (21st September – 24th September) will help provide schooling, food, medical aid and repair the many building destroyed by Cyclone Amphan.

I hope you have a fun week together.

Mini Vinnies

For those living in poverty this COVID-19 crisis has been unimaginable.  Following in the footsteps of our Loreto Kirribilli students the Mini Vinnies are organising perishable snack packs and distribute them to those in the community who need them most.

Our staff and families have been generously making packs for those who are less fortunate.

Together we can provide nourishment to those in need.

Please bring snack packs to your classroom teacher for collection (5 non perishable items in a large zip lop back)

Loreto Da Vinci

These last few weeks of term we are exploring Pop Art and various styles of Pop Artists.

Inspired by their artworks we are experimenting and creating our own using different mediums.

Our Wednesday after school art sessions had a very special visitor this week.

Mr Rod Willox came to our session. Mr Willox brought in samples of his drawings when he was between the ages of 7-8 & 9.

He loved to sit in bed at night and copy his favourite comics onto pieces of paper from his exercise books.

These included Donald Duck and The Lone Ranger. He showed us a beautiful old car he painted in watercolours. He also brought in oil paintings that his mother had painted. Mr Willox hopes to continue with his painting and artwork in his free time.

Thank you for your visit Mr Willox, we all enjoyed meeting you.

Fortnightly Tip: BUS Principle

You might sometimes be on their case, but you will always be on their side.”

BUS encompasses three essential ways that dads can provide the support that kids need.

B, Being there.

‘Being there’ ISN’T about physically near all the time.

‘Being there’ IS about being there emotionally – available and responsive when they reach out to you.

“You might sometimes be on their case, but you will always be on their side.”

U, Unconditional Love.

As carers, life coaches, guiders and discipliners we show our kids many sides of ourselves.

In amongst everything it’s important that your kids know that there are no conditions on your love.

Make sure they know that your love doesn’t depend on grades, performance, what they like, dislike or what they’re good at.

Be clear that the love you have for them is independent of their behaviour or performance, nothing will stop you loving them.

S, Special.

‘Special’ is about helping your children feel worthwhile.

Help them see their unique abilities and quirks as assets to be proud of, and to believe in their potential.

The best way to do this is by making one-on-one time for them, pointing out the things that make you proud of them, and being genuinely interested in their hobbies.
